Traditional Kalevala Mobilisation Therapy aka "TKMT"

Traditional Kalevala Mobilisation Therapy (TKMT), also known as Traditional Finnish Mobilisation Therapy, or as it’s called in Finnish, “Kalevalainen Jäsenkorjaus,” is a gentle yet highly effective Finnish folk medicine designed to treat musculoskeletal issues. TKMT takes a holistic approach to relieving tension and realigning the body from head to toe. Now available in London for the first time in many years, this unique therapy offers a natural and effective solution for those seeking relief.

Unlike forceful adjustments, TKMT uses gentle mobilisation techniques to address muscles, connective tissues, circulation, and nerve function. Starting at the feet and gradually working upwards, it helps restore the body’s natural balance, mobility, and function.

Modernised by Finnish folk medicine expert Olavi Mäkelä, TKMT is recognised and protected by the Folk Healing Association as an essential part of Finland’s living heritage. This therapy offers relief for tension and mobility issues that traditional massage techniques may not fully address, helping individuals maintain their body’s natural state with gentle, precise movements. Though TKMT has not been available in London for some time, it is now accessible once again for those seeking a truly holistic treatment.

Treatment Process

Each therapy session is designed to last up to two hours, providing a comprehensive, full-body treatment from head to toe. The experience begins at your feet and gradually works upwards, addressing tension and imbalances throughout your body.

The session starts with completing a patient form and a detailed consultation to discuss your health history and specific concerns. During the treatment, you’ll begin lying down on a massage table, and when it’s time to focus on areas like your back, spine, neck, and head, you will sit on a stool to ensure these areas are treated thoroughly and effectively.

Key Benefits of TKMT

• Alleviates back pain, headaches, and migraines: TKMT can effectively target areas of tension, relieving both chronic and acute pain, including issues related to posture, stress, or muscle imbalances.

• Restores movement range and joint function: By gently mobilising the body’s structures, TKMT helps to improve flexibility, restore joint mobility, and enhance overall movement, making everyday activities more comfortable.

• Relieves nerve impingements: TKMT works to release pressure on nerves, reducing discomfort caused by pinched nerves, sciatica, and other nerve-related issues.

• Reduces tissue pressure: TKMT helps alleviate pressure on muscles and connective tissues, relieving tightness and tension that can lead to discomfort and restricted movement.

• Improves metabolism and circulation: The gentle mobilisation techniques used in TKMT stimulate blood flow and improve fluid circulation, which in turn can boost metabolism and aid in the body’s natural healing processes.

• Balances the body’s alignment: This therapy addresses the root causes of structural imbalances, helping to restore proper posture and alignment, which can prevent further pain and injuries.

• Relieves chronic pain: For individuals suffering from long-term conditions, TKMT can provide relief where other methods, like traditional massage or chiropractic care, may have fallen short.

• Reduces stress and promotes relaxation: As a holistic therapy, TKMT not only addresses physical issues but also encourages deep relaxation, helping to reduce stress and tension throughout the body.

• Supports muscle recovery: For those who exercise frequently, TKMT can aid in muscle recovery, relieve soreness, and improve performance by addressing imbalances and tightness caused by physical activity.

• Ideal for those with sedentary lifestyles: If you spend long hours at a desk or in front of a computer, TKMT can relieve tension, improve posture, and reduce the strain caused by prolonged sitting.

TKMT is particularly beneficial for those who have found limited success with traditional massage or chiropractic care. It offers a gentle, yet highly effective alternative treatment for chronic pain, tension, and structural imbalances. If you’re seeking a holistic approach to healing and well-being, TKMT is definitely worth exploring.

TKMT FAQ

TKMT is a gentle, non-invasive Finnish therapy that focuses on mobilising the body’s structures to relieve musculoskeletal issues and promote natural alignment. By using soft, controlled movements, TKMT addresses muscles, connective tissues, circulation, and nerves to restore balance throughout the body, from the feet to the head.

Unlike regular massage, which often focuses on specific areas of muscle tension, TKMT treats the body as a whole, addressing the root cause of musculoskeletal issues rather than just the symptoms. Traditional deep tissue massages often target surface tension, which can temporarily relieve discomfort, but they may not resolve the underlying issue.

With TKMT, we work to correct imbalances in posture and alignment, and as these areas are realigned, the tension in your body is naturally relieved as a byproduct. This approach provides more long-lasting relief because we’re treating the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. There’s no need for aggressive techniques like “cracking” or deep pressure; instead, we use gentle, respectful mobilisation to guide your body back to its natural state.

Your session will begin with a brief health questionnaire to give me an overview of your general health and any specific issues or concerns that might affect the treatment. We’ll also discuss any particular areas of tension or discomfort you’d like to focus on.

This initial consultation typically lasts about 10-15 minutes and is included as part of the overall session time. The treatment itself starts at your feet and progressively moves upwards, with you initially lying down on a massage table. When working on your back, spine, and head, you will sit on a stool to allow for effective mobilisation. The session lasts between 90 and 120 minutes, depending on your needs.

Absolutely! TKMT is particularly beneficial for people who engage in sports or exercise regularly. It helps address muscle tightness, joint restrictions, and overall body imbalances that can occur due to physical activity. By focusing on gentle mobilisation, TKMT improves circulation, releases tension, and enhances joint mobility, all of which are key to faster recovery and preventing injuries.

Many athletes find that TKMT helps improve flexibility, reduce muscle soreness, and alleviate issues caused by repetitive movements or overuse. Whether you’re a runner, gym-goer, or someone involved in high-impact sports, TKMT can support your body’s recovery and performance.

Yes, TKMT is particularly effective for those dealing with chronic pain, tension, or movement restrictions. It helps improve mobility, relieve nerve impingements, and restore the body’s natural balance, making it a great option for long-standing musculoskeletal issues.

Yes, Traditional Kalevala Mobilisation Therapy (TKMT) is a gentle and adaptable treatment that is suitable for people of all ages, including children and the elderly. Since TKMT uses soft mobilisation techniques, it is particularly beneficial for those who prefer non-invasive, gentle treatments.

TKMT is designed to be gentle and non-invasive, and most of it is not painful at all. You may feel mild discomfort in areas where significant tension is present, but the goal is to release this discomfort, not cause it. Overall, TKMT is a gentle way to treat the body, but I am skilled at identifying areas of tension that may benefit from additional techniques. Many clients prefer me to address these areas as we go, while others may request to keep the treatment very light—you get to choose your comfort level.

Common areas of tension I often focus on are the calves and hands, as most clients request extra attention here to maximise the benefits. However, any part of the TKMT treatment can be modified or left out upon request to suit your preferences.

TKMT should be avoided in cases of acute bone fractures, recent severe injuries, osteoporosis, tumours, infectious skin conditions, varicose veins, haemophilia, and serious heart conditions, among others. Pregnant women and those in the postpartum period (within 3-4 months after childbirth) should also avoid TKMT.

A good rule of thumb is that if your doctor allows you to have a regular massage, then there should be no issues with receiving a TKMT treatment. However, if you have any doubts or concerns, it’s always best to consult your doctor before treatment or feel free to reach out to us for guidance.

TKMT is a full-body treatment that typically starts at the feet and works progressively upwards, addressing muscles, connective tissues, and joints throughout the entire body. Every session is designed to assess and treat the entire body, regardless of where your specific issue may be, to ensure overall balance and alignment.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Since TKMT is a gentle treatment, side effects are generally minimal. However, some people may experience a healing response afterwards. This is a natural process where the body detoxes and rebalances, which can sometimes lead to temporary soreness, fatigue, or other mild symptoms. In some cases, this may last for several days, depending on the level of tension or imbalances addressed during the session.

We strongly recommend booking this treatment at a time when you can take it easy for the following days, avoiding intense physical exertion or heavy lifting. While TKMT feels light and subtle during the session, its effects can be profound, and many clients report feeling the full impact the next day.

Every person reacts differently, so allowing yourself time to rest and recover will help you get the best possible results from the treatment.

TKMT’s holistic approach helps release physical tension, restore alignment, and improve circulation, which can enhance your overall sense of well-being. By addressing both the physical and functional aspects of your body, TKMT can help reduce stress, improve mobility, and create a feeling of balance and relaxation.

TKMT TREATMENT PROCESS FAQ

Yes, please remove all jewellery and hair accessories before your treatment. It’s also a good idea to have a shower beforehand to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed. Wear comfortable clothing, and for women, please avoid sports bras that can’t be unfastened from the back, as it’s important to expose the spine during treatment. Other than that, just stay hydrated and share any concerns or conditions during the initial consultation so I can tailor the treatment to your needs.

For your comfort, you’ll remain in your underwear throughout the treatment, with other areas covered by a towel. When working on the back, men will need to remove their shirts, and women will be asked to unfasten the backs of their bras. However, I provide special aprons or privacy covers for female clients who wish to use them for extra comfort and privacy. Please avoid wearing sports bras that cannot be opened from the back, as it’s important to expose the spinal area for effective treatment.

TKMT is a full-body treatment that typically starts at the feet and works progressively upwards, addressing muscles, connective tissues, and joints throughout the entire body. Every session is designed to assess and treat the entire body, regardless of where your specific issue may be, to ensure overall balance and alignment.

The number of sessions varies depending on the severity of your issues. Some people experience relief after just one session, while others may require several treatments for more complex or chronic conditions. A personalised treatment plan will be recommended based on your initial session and response to the therapy.

After your session, it’s important to stay hydrated and rest to allow your body to adjust. Avoid strenuous activities, including the gym or any heavy physical exertion, for the next 24-48 hours. Saunas should also be avoided during this time. Refrain from activities that involve poor posture or heavy lifting, such as biking, gardening, or moving furniture, as your body has just been realigned and these actions could disrupt the benefits of the treatment.

Some clients may feel very tired and drained after the session, and this could last for a few days. This is a natural part of the body’s healing process. It’s important to listen to your body and avoid any activities it signals you should not do. Additional sessions can be scheduled 1-2 weeks apart for optimal results.

How should I prepare for an in-home mobile treatment?

You will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare before your treatment session if I am travelling to you. In general, please ensure you have a quiet, comfortable space with enough room for a massage table.

For your comfort, prepare:

Two pillows and a couple of towels or light blankets.

Two stools (I can provide these for the first session if needed).

I can also bring pillows and towels for a small fee, but using your own helps reduce waste and supports sustainability. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
